LAHORE: Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, former Prime Minister of Afghanistan and chief of the Hizb-e-Islami, has claimed that his fighters helped Osama bin Laden escape from the Tora Bora mountains in October 2001 after the US-led troops invaded Afghanistan.

In an interview to Geo Television, Hekmatyar, who is wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said soon after the US-led forces invaded Afghanistan, he had a detailed meeting with Osama and his second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, who were moved out of Tora Bora by his fighters and taken to a safe place. He, however, refused to say where Laden and Zawahiri found shelter.

The interview was believed to have been conducted somewhere on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Asked his whereabouts, Hekmatyar said he is currently underground.
