Yes, women were much freer under Saddam. Saddam was a secular guy. Only Islamic fundamentalists persecute women and keep them down. Saddam's Iraq allowed women all kinds of freedoms, including wearing sexy western clothing, working, dancing, driving, dating, going to university, etrc. It wasn't perfect but under AL Sadr you can bet women will be put back behind the veils again.

You're nuts if you think Bush cares that much about womens rights. His best friends in the region are the Saudis who are extremely tough on women. It's democratic leaders like Hillary CLinton (feminists if you will) who have fought hard for womens rights in the third world. Laura Bush hasn't done much at all. In fact she hasn't done much for any causes except campaigning for GW.
