"Now we are told daily by the White House that Iraq is brimming with terrorists -- is that true?"

It irks me when useful words become politicized because they lose their meaning except as signals to partisan groups.

The word terrorist has been politicised. Everything in opposition to our peace and comfort or political interests is now being labeled terrorism. My kid was terrified by a nightmare the other night but I don't qualify that as a terrorist act.

A terrorist is someone who terrorises innocent individuals or groups in order to coerce them into submitting to the goals of an organization when they would other wise be inclined to oppose that organization; or to coerce the opposing force without engaging them directly. Insurgencies, freedom fighters, mercenaries, opposing forces in civil disputes, paramilitary, or military organizations may or may not use terrorism but the nature of the event or action itself is what qualifies the event as an act of terrorism, not who the perpetrators of violence are. Most of the violence going on in Iraq now is not being done by terrorists.

The primary element that I look for before labeling something as terrorism or not, is whether or not innocents have been targeted.

I don't count the assassinations of Iraqi government officials but there still seem to be a lot of bombings and shootings directed at innocents taking place in Iraq.
