There is no question that Saddam was a bad man -- there is also no doubt that the sanctions we imposed led to hundreds of thousands of deaths in Iraq. We were running out of reasons to continue with sanctions. We could not accept the idea that Saddam would soon break free from sanctions -- and that seemed increasingly likely as it became more and more obvious that Saddam had no WMD. Lifting sanctions would have saved hundreds of thousands of children and other innocent people.
