Management of the wireless efforts at Intel have told me that some of the areas they are excited about are for utility and traffic monitoring and control and security monitoring and communications. WiMAX is made to be used for multiple purposes: specific uses can be set up with specific QoS. These types of pervasive applications help to support metro wide deployments. Intel is excited because it will help them sell large quantities of chips. In the past these applications have mostly been looked at as stand-alone networks or have not been able to support the high bandwidths needed for real-time video and other uses. Wireless will be used in myriads of different configurations so you can't just look at one business case and say that this substantiates others. But the concept of blanketing areas with coverage that can be molded, at the cost of incremental deployment of more base stations/multi-hop remote base stations or mobile MH B.S., into serving several applications with high availability and reliability is very appealing.

A basic need for any wide spread development is to drive down the price/volume curve. Cellular has been able to do that because of the great success of mobile phones. WiMAX' approach and view of the future is that as wireless becomes broadband the applications that can or must be served are more diverse but commonality becomes even more important. So, to build volume it makes sense to build a framework standard for which developments of SoCs, DSPs, FPGA+software and design environments evolve to be taken advantage of across a range of applications. That creates synergy of developments and an industry design pool that can be leveraged to these specific, but potentially very large volume applications. And, in turn, that helps drive down costs of components and sub-systems that helps in sales in commodity mass markets such as for multi-mode cell phones and advanced architecture enabled base stations of various scale.
