I disagree.

I think the reason Saddam was given a trial in his own country was that the US wanted to show it was being fair as befits a democratic country that believes in human rights and had proclaimed it wanted to bring democracy to Iraq.

Another reason was that the US wanted to avoid having Saddam tried in an international court where, to be sure, the involvement and complicity of the US in some of Saddam's crimes would be revealed much to the detriment and embarrassment of the US.

To be sure, the US knew that Saddam would be found guilty and his execution could be expedited "fairly" without arousing criticism and condemnation; as a dead man tells no tales, so a dead Saddam would be a good Saddam.....................
