L.Ron Hubbard (founder of scientology)used a trick I think:

First, guys like Cruise and Becker(lol) want wisdom without paying the price i.e. thinking, study and hardship. Many people want wisdom using cliff notes. They want the "ANSWER" to the meaning of life in 10 minutes.

I think the meaning of life is mainly just a level of understanding gained over a lifetime and more of a kin to Maslow's idea of self actualiztion. I think very young people would find understanding existentialism almost impossible as they do not have enough life experiences.

Understanding existentialism first, is important as most people have to divest themselves of primitive dogma before they can truly start learning. An understanding of existentialism frees one from dogma and is the only philosophy that can meet the realities of understanding an infinite and relative universe. i.e. we all create our own reality and are responsible for our own actions. The way we create our validy as human beings, depends on how we live our lives, not what we believe.

I read one of Hubbord's books when I was young to see if I could figure out what he was doing. His books are tricky because there are threads of great profoundness in them which can confound the inexperienced reader.

Here is what I think he did. I think he bastardized the Vedic writings, which are very profound, but completely unfamiliar to Americans as they are Hindu. So he would weave ideas from the Vedic writings into his writings, and so it looked profound but it was just nonsense interspersed with ideas from other teachings.

What a lot of people do not know, is that the founder of Ecankar was a buddy of Hubbards and did the same thing.

Both teachings are just nonsense.
