"Unfortunately, the Republicans let their troll escape and he landed in the Whitehouse. "

He was a stealth troll, who said a lot of things that were flat-out LIES about his positions in 2000. Many were fooled. But, that doesn't explain 2004..

"I think its really critical to point out both issues and to acknowledge that the second issue was by far the more serious one. "

I grant you that. But the big push for this is much more Bush than the Republicans as a whole. Granted, there are elements in the Republican party who are perfectly in tune with these ideas. Just as there are elements in the Democratic party who are as bad as Harris and Shorty are trying to paint the whole party as. Both parties typically keep their trolls tied up in the back room and every pretends the door isn't there. Unfortunately, the Republicans let their troll escape and he landed in the Whitehouse. The rest of the Republicans tracked right along for a variety of reasons, none of them very good. A lot of them because they forgot what a principled stand was. They had been playing the game and forgot why they were elected. Others, I think, were genuinely afraid of terrorists around every corner. In their fear, they didn't see the implications of the powers they were granting. The majority were just too weak to stand up against the leadership who only thought in terms of power. And then there were the ones who were feeding their inner fascist. I think they are a small minority.

You may be right. However, I remember how loved Bush was by the GOP for most of this century. I wonder if you've been fooled as to who they really are, or if I am reading into things that aren't there because until very recently, I would have thought that Bush was not a troll but represented his party very well.
