Well maybe he won't have the positive return they expect. But the expectation of positive return is the reason why they are giving him so much money. If your right that he won't help them out enough to be worth $50 mil (even if you include indirectly by raising the publicity and status of the league), then they made a bad investment, but why would that be worse in a moral sense then putting all your investment funds in to dot comes in early 2000?

I haven't seen the contract, but something tells me that for $250m over 5 years the LA soccer clus is going to also get all the rights to sell Beckham's name and time via ad promotion. I just can't imagine a soccer club getting a return of $1 million per week on a soccer player. This is the USA.

As for whether or not it's immoral, I don't know if it is, I just think there are better uses to which they could put the money. Frankly I would like football &baseball ticket prices lower, so wouldn't mind seeing their salary caps regulated, I could care less what they try to charge for soccer :-)
