Kerry only volunteered back then for the same reason everyone else did, to ensure placement in the services rather than gamble on the draft lotto

kerry also volunteered to boogie out of there and avoided serving a 12 month tour like 2,500,000 other Viet-Nam veterans accomplished. even left his men behind so they could complete their 12 month tour. real sad example.....
