Yes but if you buy leveraged and have your tenants pay the mortgage you could still come out ahead.Most people need some sort of shack and depending on many factors including what else you might do with the money it suits most people to buy with controll rather than rent without controll.
Personally I have done very well with real estate in the period from the early 60's till now and I believe its still the most common way for the ordinary Joe to build equity.
