Innocent people might well plea bargain if they think there is some risk of a much bigger sentence if they don't. If a guilty plea gives a mere "slap on the wrist", or if not pleading can result in severe penalties, it might make sense.

(I'm not saying Dale was innocent, I don't know enough about the case)
