<Well then suppose we keep the AMP out of the box and let VISTA MCE or something else handle the computer oriented stuff receivers currently do. Actually that might be a good compromise since it would probably offend the CE guys less and provide more flexibility to people that already own receivers/AMPs?>

That would be a new version of a pre-pro but I just don't think it can be done until the boxes are locked down. An AMD Live platform that involved video switching/recording as well as decoding would be fantastic in principle but with all of the variables, as the platform is meant to be flexible depending on the customer's needs/wants, you just end up with a mess of driver issues and Windows problems. The last thing I want is to see a BSOD while watching a movie. Not to mention it seems the studios and cable companies are moving away from allowing the consumers to record HDTV.

If AMD was to lock down their Live platform there would be quite the backlash as they have portrayed themselves as the friendly company to the DIY crowd.

Don't forget that new receivers are also doing scaling/up converting, which is hugely CPU intensive in an HTPC (ffdshow), and that the specifications keep changing. Anybody who is into home theaters has tried to purchase 'future proof' equipment and it is impossible. There are a few companies that are using a computer card model, such as Onkyo, so who knows in the future?
