Re: The best thing in any system is the speakers

The problem today is that everything is going MP3, and MP3 sound quality (at the typical 128mb rate) is mediocre.

I never really understood how bad MP3s were until I went shopping for speakers (about 5 years ago - looking at Polk LSi series, having read about them). The salesman played a number of music selections at one end of the room while I was at the other end, close to the speakers, becoming more and more disappointed.

They sounded crummy - I was surprised, told him what I thought and asked if something was wrong. He said he'd put in a CD, which surprised me since I thought that was what was playing. He told me that he'd been playing MP3s.

I would not have thought it was that obvious. The difference after he put a CD in was dramatic. (the Polks were very good). Everything else was the same (receiver, speakers, etc.) he just switched from MP3 source to CD.
