I remember my folks drilling it into me..."Turn off the light when you're not in the room!"

Now, my wife and kids think I'm nuts when I walk around the house turning off things not in use. The public is still generally clueless, IMO. Way more concerned about who the next Idol is.

i assume those parents who drive their kid one block to bus stop is for security reasons and wish to watch over their kids until they get on the bus.

ps no bus for us as kids unless you lived more than 2 miles from school. it was not fun walking those winter months in the northeast.
