Most of the stuff they use here is sort of in between sand and gravel. I call it "pea gravel", but I'm not sure if that's the correct term.

Falling on ice is a lot worse than falling on gravel. One week during ice season we had fifty people with broken bones. I've had several spectacular falls, but no serious damage so far.

When I was a kid they tried taconite tailings from the iron mines on the roads which worked well and cost practically nothing. But come Feb. everyone's carpets turned black from tracking it in on their shoes and that was the end of that experiment.
