Yeah, it was nuts. It was like "Vietnam... you want me to freaking die in VIETNAM!. WTF!" Being a dumb 18-19 YO kid that made you actually look into the policy and realize just what a convoluted mess it was.

But Tim argued that if you didn't have a deferment you had very little chance of getting drafted and going to Vietnam. Right... they were taking any warm body that wasn't smart enough to avoid the draft.

You remember how long it was from being drafted to actually being "in country"? I don't think it was very long. They had it down to a science. One good thing... unlike today, those guys did one tour and they were through.
