Israel denies plan for Iran nuclear strike

ISRAEL'S government yesterday denied a newspaper report that it has drawn up plans to use low-yield nuclear weapons against up to three targets in a bid to stop Tehran's uranium enrichment effort.

The Sunday Times report stated the prime target for Israel was the Natanz site for enriching uranium, south of Tehran. Plans call for a plane to drop a laser-guided bomb to blow open a shaft and then for other planes to drop low-yield nuclear weaponry into the hole, destroying the bunker with limited fallout, the paper said.

Mark Regev, an Israeli foreign ministry spokesman, denied the report, saying Israel was interested in a diplomatic solution and wanted to see the implementation of the 23 December UN Security Council resolution imposing sanctions on Iran's trade in sensitive nuclear materials and technology for refusing to halt enrichment.
