It depends on who you believe, doesn't it? The article I linked questioned and heard from numerous intelligence officials and other western leaders "in-the-know". I find them more credible than Muslim extremists. If I ever doubt my inner thoughts I can ask myself whether I would rather live in Iran or Kansas? Where would I find free speech and uncensored opinion and reliable testimony and forward humanitarian values? My answer has always been Kansas. And Occam's razor tells me that "fear mongering" is inadequate as an answer against all those people expressing consistent Western concerns.
