Methodist ministers launch petition to stop Bush library from going to SMU

DALLAS (AP) - A group of Methodist ministers from across the United States launched an online petition Thursday urging Southern Methodist University to stop trying to land George W. Bush's presidential library.

The petition, on a newly created website, www.protectsmu.org, says that "as United Methodists, we believe that the linking of his presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name is utterly inappropriate."

"Methodists have a long history of social conscience, so questions about the conduct of this president are very concerning," said one of the petition's organizers, Rev. Andrew Weaver of New York, who graduated from SMU's Perkins School of Theology.

Brad Cheves, SMU's vice-president for external affairs and development, said Thursday that the Methodist church is diverse in its membership and opinions and that those involved with the petition reflect only one view.

"We believe the vast majority of the Methodist membership, university and community support the library and that it will benefit the faculty, students and community for generations to come," Cheves said.

SMU emerged as the apparent winner in the library competition last month when the site selection committee said it was entering into further discussions with just SMU, the 11,000-student, private university which is the alma mater of Bush's wife, Laura. The Bushes are Methodists.

Some SMU professors have opposed Bush's foreign policy, mainly the war in Iraq. Some faculty members also have complained that the library complex's think tank dedicated to the philosophy of the Bush administration would hurt the school's reputation.

But at a faculty meeting Wednesday, SMU president Gerald Turner said those fears were unfounded. He said among the library's benefits were increasing the school's visibility and spurring economic development in the city.

The project will be financed with a private fund drive aimed at raising at least US$200 million.

While SMU's president said his university' exclusive talks with the selection committee would resume in a few days, the other finalists are Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and the University of Dallas. A decision is expected in a few months.

<<met with the popular author of a best-selling book that claims that God requires a war with Iran demonstrates just how intensely politics trumps policy (and human lives) for this unhinged administration.>> Type the words gog magog and iran into Google search and you will get 71,000 returns!!!
Browse into these sites and you will see how huge this BS is being promulgated across the internet , it is a classic case of self-fulfilling prophecy.

As you know i can get pretty esoteric and rap about the power of archetypal embedding in the human mind such that it becomes a force far far stronger than reasonable men can grasp.
i will spare all with my Jungian Based ramblings.
But let's just say the "Gog and Magog" theme is embedded in the mind of many millions in the U.S. that believe absolutely Gog/Magog are in fact Iraq and Iran. And thy have absolutely belief that Iran will attack the West with Nuclear Bombs.
And no amount of argument will change them, this is a HUGE CULT.
Numbers go as high as 40million americans take this as the revelation of G-d, that Iran is the destroyer; and thus must be destroyed.
So those think tanks that go into all their scenarios EXCLUDE this, as it is innocuous, this; so they think.
They don't factor it in.
Their mistake.

**********************************************************
i will repeat my refrain of those that think history is rational haven't studied history.

We have a fair amount of indications that beneath all the blitherings GWB gives for his actions their remains within him the belief that Iraq and Iran are Gog and Magog and he is about doing G-d's Will. Max
p.s. How easy it is for Americans to LAUGH OFF something serious.
o won't even repeat what went down between Russert and Bush on the issue of who his father is, let's just say the signs have been there for several years.
i am about 3.5 years later getting some company.
Cripes all my rants are the same as 3 years ago:)
i should save typing and just dig up my old posts from the Foreign Correspondent thread on iHub---o my!!!LOl!
