Some Qualcomm related comments from Motorola.....

- Motorola attributed a portion of their miss to a lack of product strength in the UMTS market. The ramp in the MAXX and the XX didnt take place until late in the year and they missed the US HSDPA/WCDMA market entirely.

- As they explain it, they actually shipped the number of WCDMA/HSDPA handsets that they expected, but a competitor's price reductions on their WCDMA lineup brought their handsets down to Motorola's EDGE pricepoints (I assume that this is Nokia's Nseries pricecuts). That really hurt their competitiveness in the mid to high end in Europe.

- The fall-off in iDEN occured even faster than expected.

Overall, after years of downplaying the WCDMA market, Motorola is now acknowledging that it took them too long to transition their product lineup. Overall, it seems like a fairly bullish viewpoint for Qualcomm since one possible "quick" fix for Motorola is to ramp some ODM WCDMA models from companies like Compal....even if this doesnt happen, the fact that Motorola is FINALLY taking the market seriously is a very good thing.

I would also add that Motorola's comments on the 4th quarter would seem to indicate that Nokia had very good sales for the Nseries.

I am sure we will get more details at their analyst meeting which starts at 10am EST....
