But that’s not something one maverick teacher, no matter how idealistic, perky or self-sacrificing, can accomplish. Tom Moore, a 10th-grade history teacher at a public school in the Bronx, is writing a book about his teaching experiences. Tom Moore is my hero.....I would never, ever teach in the Bronx. I would be too scared. In the barrio or the ghetto, violence is one small explosion away. Last Spring, I was teaching kids in an inner city school this software application that can be used in social studies classes. While I was working with this one guy, there were two guys talking near me....just having a normal conversation. Suddenly, it exploded into a fight.........they were knocking each other against the walls and the desk. This other teacher and I finally got them apart. It happened in a flash......you know like two dogs.....they will be checking each other out and then suddenly they explode and are going for each other's throat. And then I have to listen to the crap from Steve or Tim how schools get too much money. I'll tell you.......there was a point last Fall when I almost quit the program. I know I can be a good teacher but I am not sure I can deal with all the negative stuff.....messed up kids, poorly maintained schools, the violence, and then the complaints from the public. It started to look like a no win situation but, of course, that's not true either. And I do enjoy teaching. Thanks for posting the article.......it was very timely.
