I know hindsight is 20-20 but really we would have been better off taking a pragmatic approach and treating Saddam as a counter to Iran.

Seriously we should have lifted the sanctions got our hands on his oil (Iraq has some of the largest oil reserves in the world) and armed him if Iran got uppity.

Letting the natural adversaries in the Middle East fight it out while we stand back and drain the oil would have been a policy of most benefit to the USA.

I no longer see Saddam as a bad-man. He was just a symbol of the brutal way in which the Sunnis maintained control over the Shiites. Sure now Bush has reversed that dynamic - the Shiites control Iraq and if unleashed will annihilate the Sunni's but I don't see where American interests have been furthered. Saddam's agents tortured but the Shiites death squads often kill by drilling into the head - and thats happening a lot - not much evolution there. Besides we all know we torture or export to torture so I find it a little funny that we still have hard core right-wingers arguing Iraq is worth it because we stopped Saddam from torturing. Saddam was a Conservative and it seems when you get right down to it Conservatives are pro-torture.

In fact one could argue that we have harmed ourselves with the massive treasure and loss/injury of life and even the Bush administration is coming around to realize Iran's hand is now much stronger.

Then why did that nut case over play his hand and make everyone think he had WMD? We can't just say, "Oh well, maybe he's bluffing." That's not an option when it comes to our own security... he could have told us to "inspect all you want, go ahead and look in my living room, in my bathroom, look where ever you like, I have nothing to hide." But, he didn't do that... if he did, then he would still be in power today...
