The alignment of the neo-cons with one influential sect of Christian protestants is over Israel. According to their beliefs, in the end times, Israel will have control over much of that area. When that happens, it will signal that it's getting close to the time when Jesus can come again. So anything they see as strengthening Israel's hand is good and anything that hurts it (like land for peace deals, a military build up by rivals like Iran or Iraq) is bad because then Jesus won't be able to come again. That makes them perfect partners with the neo-cons who want to mop the place up, make everyone in our image, and support Israel so strongly. The ironic part is that when Jesus comes again, they believe that all the Jews that don't convert will be wiped out. So they are pro-Israel but are actually looking forward to the day most of the Jews get wiped out for not converting.

The Catholics and Protestants are aligned over very common religious beliefs on abortion, gay marriage and other social issues. I don't think most Catholics admire the policies of the neo-cons in the middle east. Perhaps it's split like most other groups. I don't know any Catholics that believe our foreign policy should incorporate beliefs about the end times. ;-)
