Democrats say energy bill begins fight against global warming

WASHINGTON -- Northwest Democrats are hailing a bill in Congress to promote renewable energy. They say it is the first in a series of steps the new Democratic-controlled Congress will take to combat global warming.

The House bill, which passed today, would impose a $15 Billion package of fees, taxes and royalties on oil and gas companies. The money would be used to promote renewable fuels such as wind and solar energy and biomass.

Republicans say the bill singles out the oil industry for punitive tax treatment.

Democrats from Washington and Oregon all voted in favor of the bill. Representative Dave Reichert of Washington was the only Republican from the region to support it.

Congressman Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Seattle, calls the measure "one small step on a long road toward curing America's addiction to oil."

Representative Cathy McMorris, a Republican from Spokane, says she agrees with Democrats on the importance of funding renewable energy projects. However she says this bill would do nothing to reduce US dependence on foreign oil and would increase gas prices for American consumers.
