Some were surely like that, I think that at that time T. V. Soong was considered to be about the richest man in the world, something like Bill Gates or Buffet, inflation adjusted. Guys like him did fine, I suppose. But there were very many others that had a very hard time.

I know two men, both having left China around 1949, and now one runs a small bakery in the Philippine city where I used to live and the other fellow has an office supply business, his store being about the size of my kids bedroom. I got to know these guys well years ago when I had my boy in the Chinese school there.
