Work performance is the major goal, based upon customer satisfaction. If your friend is dull as a rock, he needs to change. When your 27, its hard to change what's been your personality your entire life. Without telling him he's dull, I have encouraged him to take an acting class in the hope of loosening him up. Having said that, you do know there is a growing belief that a person's personality is to some extent molded by his genes. I suspect you can change the programming of those genes, but I think it must be hard.I don't see why he couldn't be encouraged to engage his students. He has been.....we all have been. One of the problems we worked on in physics was firing a gun at a monkey falling out of a tree. If engaging the students with that or possibly the example of why you need to wear seatbelts doesn't get their attention, I would suggest he could use some help. We have been taught all kinds of ways to pique the interest of students.......stuff like making a unique or unusual premise the heart of a problem such as the one you mention above, videos, learning games, staging events like the president's state of the union; having students experience an event by actually living it like what it must have been like for a slave crossing the Atlantic in a slave ship; encouraging student participation in the classroom through group presentations, etc. I'm not for firing bad teachers right off the bat. Their tenure gives them the reassurance they need that if they are dull as a rock and hurting students' ability to learn, they will be ignored. Unacceptable. This guy will not be a bad teacher......he's very bright and committed. I am just afraid he will have to work extra hard to excite his students to learn. Very few teachers are charismatic and that's because very few people in a society are charismatic. In any case, it should not be a prerequisite to teach.
