Sounds to me as if you are saying you don't like the guy but his overall effect on Bosnia was better than Christopher's. If so, that jibes with what I've heard. He's, some say, more than a little like Richard Clarke, supremely arrogant, difficult to work with, but the net is a good one.

I've also read the observation that he's dying to be the Secretary of State. It's interesting, on that point, to think, who among the Dems, might be picked for such. And just how good a job they might do.

Holbrooke would be at the top of most lists. But his tendency to be so hard to work with has cost him appointments in the past. Might do so again.

Biden can't possibly become president for all the obvious reasons, but would be a clear candidate here. I have some idea what his views are but I can't imagine he would be a diplomatic success.

Hagel would be a good bipartisan pick if he would jump parties, as Cohen did to be Secretary of Defense. That would clearly signal mainstream foreign policy views.
