Hi tech101,

Exposure to radio waves has been studied for decades.

You should consider the on-hook radiation - when nothing is happening, rather than off-hook radiation noted below.

Consider how many hours a day your cellphone is near your body, and that it continually wakes up to receive beacons from cell towers, and how little it talks to base stations. When it is transmitting, the cellphone might be using 600 mW if indoors, but is being power-controlled by base stations.

As time goes by, more of the radios have Transmit Power Control, where they only use the power necessary to connect, rather than a set (necessarily high) transmit power.

The exposure caused by BlueTooth (1-4 mW into an antenna), Wi-Fi (usually 30 mW to 100 mW into an antenna) and cordless phones (up to 400 mW into an antenna) have shown no problems. There are lots of forms of these technologies, and the trend is to better standby time, which can come from less transmit power.

In some indoor cubicle deployments, Wi-Fi radios transmit 2.5 mW, and people are working on sub 1-mW controlled transmit power.

Neither WiFi APs or cordless phones transmit 1W, while cellphone base stations are probably 10W per sector in urban environments.

'Red flags' come up every year, but to date the science behind them ;-) is suspect. You might look at the Russian studies of people who live under High Voltage transmission lines. ;-(
