If there's no reasonable alternative (it's simply the nature of the beast) and if full disclosure is made, I don't see how it can be inappropriate.

I'll ask you the same question I asked LB. How could you do it better?

WRT this particular Newsweek poll, the items in question were broken down by party as well as totaled. I think that it would have been smarter for Newsweek if they left out the totals and let users do their own weighting, or not. That would force users to think through how they are portraying the numbers. That would discourage users from sloppily reporting the totals as something they aren't. If the users report the raw totals deceptively, then the deception absolutely can't be attributed to Newsweek.
