I'm actually surprised by just how low the figure is. I had thought there were at least 30% who would remain enthusiastic down to the very bitter end.

I've been trying to remember, for instance, just what Nixon's poll numbers were as he went down the tubes. On that point, I noticed Nixon's approvel numbers at a similar point just before he resigned in the summer at 26%. Which are below Bush's approval numbers at the moment, but the neighborhood is close.

17 percent strongly approve of the way he is handling his job? That's amazing. Who are these people? What exactly do they think he is doing right?

Any number of other political threads on SI will give you your answer in graphic detail.

I am more interested in knowing if any serious voices in the rightwing press are looking at these numbers and saying hey, it's time to put a new agenda out there that will steer our party off the path to complete self-immolation.

Since I don't spend time with the naked partisan press on either side, anyone who finds interesting pieces in that vein is welcome to post them. George Will is about the only one I see warning that the Republican train is going way off the rails.
