Of course such pressure doesn't guarantee improvement. Some businesses fail instead of rising to meet the competition

Of course in the long run (and often even in the not so long run) that is a major mechanism for improvement in the system overall. The specific company doesn't improve, or doesn't improve enough, but the economy as a whole does as more efficient, responsive, and/or innovative companies take over from less capable competitors.
