What makes you think that they *haven't*? (And, a LOT FASTER then I came up with it....)

The way Bush II is 'invested' (read: set in stone) in his current course, and the preternatural speed at which Generals have been retired, transfered, moved-to-the-shelf (prior to the war's official start, during various stages of the Iraqi engagement, and currently), combined with our tradition of civilian leadership over the military... has all produced an --- environment --- less then conducive for active duty Generals talking back to the WH.... (There is good, and there is bad, in that condition.)

Still, the professionals have long cautioned against a sustained American involvement in an inter-Islamic Iraqi civil war. (Even after they are rotated/retired....)
