Do you know why there hasn't been a big push to fill the SPR other than for temporary political gain? It turns out if we had used the money spent in 1980 to put oil in the SPR and had instead invested it in US treasuries, we would have saved enough money to pay $312 for a barrel of oil today.....and then there is the cost of building and maintaining the storage facilities. And now for the coup de gras, the oil they are storing isn't refined by US refineries these days, so it would have to be shipped out to Caribbean refineries, processed there and then shipped back to us. Nice pimp, huh?
