As you mentioned they're likely using feed from someone else.

All three stories clearly show the Associated Press byline. I haven't done a word for word comparison but it look like exactly the same article.

And I don't think they would have done the reporting on the story that the NYT and WP would have.

I'm not positive what you mean. I wouldn't expect the Washington Post or the NYT to have reporters in SD. Fox might pick up a story from a Fox affiliate in SD.

The way the 24 hour news cycle is these days, I expect all three editors [or staff] saw the title of the story, looked at the word count and immediately passed it to PRINT. The name of the game is readership and there's not much better "news" to grab the reader than sex, boys, and politicians.
