Yes many of the old Russian boats were very noisy and aren't going to be sneaking up the Hudson anytime soon. I remember one North Atlantic run tracking an Alpha class at 65,000 yards or 32 1/2 nautical miles. They were so noisy they were not only easy to track they had no hope of hearing you over their own noise. The Alpha was insanely fast though and could dive crazy deep which was their defense.
