I've looked at some of the studies like the one Grace is referencing...

No offense, but are you psychic?? Grace has not (in this thread) referenced any studies of net worth, US, global, or otherwise. If you know what she is basing her assertion on, I would love to read it.

How many people in the US have a net worth of negative $55k in the US? These people could possibly negate or skew the results depending on how the number was calculated.

Do you know the difference between the average (or mean) and the median? Try looking them up on (say) wikipedia, or even in the pdf I referenced in my last post. Suffice it to say that there is no distortion of the type you envision.

And in case you were wondering, the cited pdf includes a list of the assets and liabilities included in their analysis of household balance sheets. We are not talking "standard of living", we are talking "net worth" (which is exactly what Grace said). Once again, I recommend you read the source provided.
