Healthcare is a service industry and uniquely unsuited for the traditional methods of competition, I would argue.

Yes.

You have a knee-jerk reaction that is much too simplistic for the real world. Sometimes for-profit works, sometimes it doesn't. Why, for example, do we spend about 5-10 times as much for a soldier in Iraq as we do for a contractor especially when said contractor is doing the same thing?

That's the public sector versus the private sector. Why, in that example, is the public sector is cheaper?

Some parts of semiconductor companies are non profit. There are technologies developed at publicly-funded universities and through grants which support future product development. There are also publicly granted monopolies in the form of patents.

As I said, you have a very simplistic view of the world. You need to see reality.
