The move would more than double Edison Mission's investment in wind power. The company currently owns or is building 654 megawatts of wind power capacity. Edison Mission will work with privately owned developer U.S. Wind Force, based in Pittsburgh, to build the wind power facilities. Building all 1,000 megawatts would cost about $2 billion, said U.S. Wind Chief Executive David McAnally. Edison Mission spokesman Charles Parnell said the amount the company will spend is still unclear. "I don't think we know any final investment until we go through the normal permitting process," he said. McAnally said the companies will focus on sites in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. Building the towering windmills that generate electricity from wind has occasionally proved to be controversial in those states, drawing protests from some residents who fear the impact on their views and environmentalists who say the blades of the wind mills kill bats and birds. "We're very careful how we approach the preliminary review of a site," McAnally said. "You're not going to get all of the sites you start with, but hopefully you can get most of them." Edison Mission owns or leases capacity in 18 power plants with a net physical capacity of 9,914 MW. The company owns 7,500 megawatts coal-burning power plant capacity in the Midwest and mid-Atlantic. -By Matthew Dalton, Dow Jones Newswires; 201-938-4604; matthew.dalton@dowjones.com
