Isn't that one of the goals of the democrats though - to make inroads into the south? What better way to nibble at that goal?

I don't know why you say that. The Democrats haven't been able to get a non-southerner elected President since John Kennedy. Unless you count 2000, when it didn't stick. And Gore is from Tennessee, anyway.

In general, I agree, but Clinton went that way in 92 with his choice of Gore. Both moderate Dems and Southerners. Ran against conventional wisdom.
