"I regard this as a necessary step toward understanding why I did what I did and making sure it never happens again."

sounds to me like he already know why he did it

sounds like a slur slip to me

Your comments remind me of this columnist's:

"Isaiah Washington of "Grey's Anatomy" yesterday became the latest embarrassed celebrity to try this shortcut, checking into a rehab facility to help him with an "understanding" of why he used an anti-gay slur in connection with cast-mate T.R. Knight.

Like there's something to "understand." He knew the word, he used it. What's unclear?

Washington now says he wants to use this incident to promote harmony between gays and straights, which sounds more admirable than saying, "I don't want to lose my gig," which is what he really means.

I, personally, find the "to promote harmony between gays and straights" part a bit "narrow minded" or at least single minded, in itself. I would hope the goal would be to promote harmony among all people.

My reaction to the entire article was, "Who knew that rehab could cure bigotry?"
