It's still a useful concept and tool, when used correctly. I used to use it when building staff in poor performing units. You bring in a critical mass of high performers and the whole unit perks up. Identifying before hand just how many it takes to make that critical mass and produce the tip is iffy, but the concept is still valuable. I distrust any pronouncement that we're at a tipping point environment wise, too. I hate to see useful notions misused. But I also hate to see folks throw the notion out because of a misapplication.
