Perhaps it would help if you picture the govt. as the insurance company??

IIRC, I called Medicare Insurance, and you seemed to think it was not although perhaps it was Geode. I clearly understand that Medicare is PRIMARILY insurance. That is why I don't understand arguments for non-profit and single-payer systems. Most of the things Geode argues for in health care reform are in fact not insurance and have nothing to do with insurance, yet his solution is to get rid of insurance. Astonishing!

I've clearly stated what I think insurance is and what functions it provides. These are important functions. I've also clearly stated that IMO, insurance is a major factor in rising health care costs. This in no way negates that it also provides a very important actuarial function which is absolutely vital to most people.

Insurance has nothing to do with how the sum total of money is obtained to pay for the sum total of health care. It also has little positive, and IMO considerable negative impact on what the total amount is. For answers to where the money comes from and much of how to control costs, you must turn to other places, outside insurance. Please remember that this is equally true whether the insurance is from private insurance companies or a public one such as Medicare. No difference.
