Now you have touched on something meaningful, imo. My only thoughts are that if such a program is thoughtfully designed and has public support, then the public will ultimately keep the govt. in line.

I can't say for sure but I'll bet a nickel that Medicare, even with the corruption of Tauzin et al is still a better deal than private insurance.

Oversight is oversight and if Medicare doesn't have it, neither will the private insurers since they're being looked after (or not) by the same people.

Interestingly Medicare was whacked upside the head but Bush failed to do in SS. Maybe that's because SS has a wider constituency.

I tell ya SS never looked so good than when Bush was trying to kill it.
