I don't think Kerry changed at all. Maybe you were too close to see the change. I remember at the end of the convention when Kerry saluted and said "Ready for Duty" all I could think of was Shirley Temple in Captain January. I thought it was a bit of humor to begin the serious business. His exploits in Vietnam were a great backstory, but it seemed to be the central theme all of a sudden. My Kerry bumpersticker and yard sign that season dated from well before Edwards name was added so I felt I had a strong impression of who he said he was before that convention. TP
