The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said in a statement that about 30 million litres of petroleum products are consumed daily in the country while the capacity of its three refineries (located in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna) is about 17 million litres or 56.6 percent of national need. Thus, even at the best of times, the and world's six largest exporter of oil must import 43.4 percent of petroleum products required to satisfy local needs, the NNPC statement said. After the vandalisation on February 18 of the Chanomi Creek pipeline, which supplies crude from Escravos to the Warri and Kaduna refineries, both facilities were out of service, leading to an 80 percent dependency on product importation, it said. The Port Harcourt refinery was also recently shut down because of "severe" technical problems, the organisation said. "The consequence of the outage of all the three refineries is a 100 percent dependency on importation," it explained. With a total dependence on imports, the nation relies on the Atlas Cove-Mosimi pipeline in southwest Nigeria as a major route for about 80 percent of all its petroleum products. But this pipeline route was attacked by vandals three times last month, a situation which in the past three weeks has caused serious fuel scarcities in Lagos and most parts of southwest.""
