The Baltic republics are hardly one of the most socialist countries in Europe anymore. The Scandinavian countries, while they have high tax rates, in many ways have more labor flexibility than France or Germany. In any case for comparisons to the US I would think its best to take large countries in the EU or the EU as a whole (which doesn't have a whole lot more people than the EU).
