A very interesting and good post! I am glad you are not as rabid as you seemed to be in some of your posts in the past. As Deepak Chopra said this morning on TV (I believe it was on CNN), the religions of the world are largely responsible for the troubles we have today. I agree wholeheartedly with him. BTW, Karl Marx and Mao Zedong noted that religions are the opiates of the masses. As in the time of the Crusades (10th & 11th centuries) when the Pope(s) and other churchmen declared it was all right to kill the Moslems for the glory of God and Christendom, today we have radical Moslems who kill self-righteously in the name of Islam, and rabid Rabbis in Israel explicate to their congregations all the injustices perpetrated against the Moslems by Israel. A huge mistake the west, in particular the US, constantly makes is judging the Moslem world by its own standards and being ignorant of what drive/inspire them to be so dead set against the west as to commit acts so seemingly incomprehensible to most of us. As one Islamic scholar has pointed out, "But unfortunately, these mercy-focused, peacemaking ideas (of Mushammad) are lost [today] in the overall discourse in the Muslim world about reviving lost glory and setting right the injustice of Western domination." "For a Muslim Martin Luther King to emerge, Muslim discourse would have to shift away from the focus on power and glory and include taking responsibility as a community for our own situation." Far from hearing about the injustice and exploitation perpetrated against the Moslems, the US and its subservient media constantly drum into our heads the Moslems are rabid fanatics and mindless killers out to defeat and dominate us, if not kill us all, and so we have to nip their senseless ambition in the bud once and for all time. In this regard, as I see it, the Christian Fundamentalists have been urging Bush to hasten the world to the endtimes. To be sure, these folks believe in the literal truth of the Bible and in the final battle of Armageddon. As far as the rabid Moslems are concerned, they believe that victory will ultimately be theirs as Muhammad had promised it to them just before he ascended, over Jerusalem, into Paradise. And so their faith will never make them give up their mission for the Resurgence of Islamic Power and Glory and for righting the past injustice and exploitation perpetrated against them by the west. Which means that even if the US and allies succeed in defeating them in the foreseeable future, the flame of Muslim vengeance will ever flare up, time and again, until perhaps there is no more OIL left in the Middle East and Muslim-controlled territories elsewhere???? Or until the whole world finally attains the Cosmic Consciousness that religions have been the root cause of all of their differences and troubles????? and agree to be rid of them all????? .
