It has always seemed to me that China was thoughtfully managing its transition from communism, perhaps to avoid the kind of economic collapse the Soviet Union experienced.

When you've been an oligarchy in one form or another for a few thousand years and represent 1/4 of the world's population "thoughtful management" is pretty understandable. We could use a little more thoughtful management ourselves.

I had the pleasure of meeting a Brit who had lived in mainland China for nearly 15 years. As far as he could tell capitalism was alive and well. He even had a rather different view on religion and China. That being China didn't have much objection to religion with the exception of Roman Catholics. Their problem with RC was it's ties to the Vatican. As long as religion was within the borders of China, they didn't much care.
