Hagel is the Lieberman of the GOP (except he's right and Lieberman is wrong), so maybe. But to what end? No way Hagel can get the nomination, though someone like Kerry might want him as a VP, though Kerry isn't running.

i think 2008 would be the most auspicious time for an Independent Ticket to possibly win since 1912--when the BullMoose Party lost, but made a strong run.
An interesting matter is several key planks in the BullMoose Party(aTeedy Roosvelt Republican Party breakaway party) were used by FDR in his 1932 campaign.So in the end, that 1912 election sowed the seeds of new ideas that were to be used by FDR.

Something i had not known, FDR, who was to become the most formidable Democrat in the history of the Democratic Party was NOT the parties choice. He was not the favored nor endorsed candidate going into primaries.
FDR won his candidacy as a renegade outsider.Max
